What is ASD?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition caused by differences in how the brain is wired. People with ASD often display differences in their communication and social interactions, thinking and feeling, and their strengths and interests. ASD is often linked to differences in physical, developmental and mental health, impacting daily living.

Levels of ASD

The impact of ASD is broken down into three levels and describes an individual's current level of functioning and how much support they need. Although ASD is a lifelong diagnosis, the level of ASD is subject to change.

  • Level 1: individuals with Level 1 ASD often do not need a lot of support. They may have difficulties navigating social cues, prefer routine and sameness and struggle with switching between tasks. This was previously known as Asperger’s syndrome.

  • Level 2: individuals with Level 2 ASD often require substantial support. Difficulties associated with ASD may be more pronounced to casual observers.

  • Level 3: individuals with Level 3 ASD often require very substantial support. This is characterised by severe challenges in communication, extreme inflexibility and repetition in thinking and behaviour. Individuals may also be nonverbal and nonresponsive to others.

How can an assessment help?

An ASD assessment can help deepen your understanding of yourself or a loved one and can offer some guidance. Learning more about yourself is helpful to assist in how to best approach the challenges of life.

An assessment of ASD may help guide support around education and work. It may entitle individuals to services, such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
